Description
Bacteroides Fragilis is an anaerobic, gram-negative bacterium which is part of the normal microbiota of the human gastrointestinal tract. However, it can act as an opportunistic pathogen, causing infections if it reaches the bloodstream or surrounding tissues following surgery, disease or trauma. When performing its usual job, B. fragilis is essential for healthy gastrointestinal functions such as mucosal immunity. B. fragilis is also the only bacterium shown to induce abscess formation as an independent infection organism. This bacterium is considered a driver of colonic disease in predisposed human individuals.
