Description
Bartonella spp. are gram-negative bacteria transmitted to humans through vectors such as fleas, body lice, and flea-infested animals. Bartonella henselae (cat scratch disease) is transmitted through cat scratches or bites, is characterized by fever and lymphadenopathy, and can lead to neuroretinitis or endocarditis in immunocompromised individuals. Bartonella quintana (trench fever) is spread by body lice, and presents with relapsing fever, severe bone pain, and potential endocarditis. Bartonella bacilliformis (Carrion’s disease) is transmitted by infected sand flies, and causes febrile anaemia and skin lesions. Immunocompromised individuals are at a high risk of more severe forms of this disease.
