Description
Clostridium perfringens is a Gram-positive, spore-forming, anaerobic bacterium widely found in soil, decaying vegetation, and the intestines of humans and animals. It is a common cause of food poisoning, typically resulting from ingestion of improperly cooked or stored meat and poultry, leading to abdominal cramps and diarrhoea within 6 to 24 hours after consumption. More severe infections include gas gangrene (clostridial myonecrosis), a rapidly progressing and life-threatening condition characterized by muscle necrosis, severe pain, swelling, and gas production in tissues. This occurs when spores enter wounds with anaerobic conditions. C. perfringens produces several toxins, notably alpha-toxin, which plays a key role in tissue destruction and systemic toxicity.
