Description
Burkholderia cepacia is a group of Gram-negative, aerobic bacteria known for their environmental resilience and intrinsic resistance to many antibiotics. They are opportunistic pathogens primarily affecting individuals with cystic fibrosis (CF) or chronic granulomatous disease, where they can cause serious respiratory infections. In these patients, B. cepacia can lead to rapid lung function decline, chronic colonization, and in some cases, a severe, sometimes fatal, systemic illness known as cepacia syndrome. The bacteria are found in soil, water, and moist environments and can survive in hospital settings, posing challenges for infection control.
