This kit in detail
Description
Hepatitis G virus (HGV), also known as GB virus C (GBV-C), is an RNA virus in the Flaviviridae family that is related to the hepatitis C virus but does not appear to cause significant liver disease. HGV is transmitted primarily through blood and blood products, as well as through sexual contact and vertical transmission from mother to child. It is frequently found in individuals with high-risk behaviours, such as intravenous drug use or multiple blood transfusions. Despite its name, HGV has not been conclusively linked to hepatitis or liver damage. Interestingly, some studies suggest that co-infection with HGV may have a beneficial effect in HIV-infected individuals, potentially slowing disease progression, although the mechanism is not fully understood. There is no specific treatment or vaccine for HGV, and its clinical significance remains limited. Diagnosis is typically done through molecular testing, such as PCR, to detect viral RNA in the blood.
