Nocardia spp. is a genus of gram-positive, opportunistic bacterial pathogens that are found widely in the environment within soil, decaying organic matter and water. In humans, Nocardia infections are associated with nocardiosis, a rare but life-threatening disease that mostly affects individuals with weakened immune systems. This disease most frequently affects the lungs, causing symptoms such as fever, cough, chest pain, pneumonia and shortness of breath.
