Description
Tropheryma Whipplei Bacterium causes Whipple’s disease, a rare bacterial infection that affects the joints and digestive system. T. whipplei affects the mucosal lining of the small intestine first, creating small sores on the intestine wall. The bacteria also affect the villi that line the small intestine, leading to symptoms such as diarrhoea, stomach cramping, abdominal pain and weight loss. In some cases, patients may experience difficulty walking, vision problems, confusion and memory loss. Male patients between the ages of 40-60, as well as those whose jobs involve frequent contact with sewage and wastewater, have an increased risk of contracting this disease.
