Description
Chagas disease is a parasitic infection caused by Trypanosoma cruzi (T. cruzi), a unicellular, flagellated protozoan. Transmission occurs through direct contact with the faeces/urine of the infected vector, triatomine bugs, which feed on hosts in endemic regions at night. The disease progresses through two phases. The acute phase presents as a mild or asymptomatic illness, with swelling at the infection site, fever, rash, fatigue, swollen glands, or organ enlargement. Without treatment, the infection may transition into the chronic phase, which can remain asymptomatic for life or develop symptoms later down the line.
