Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease caused by Leptospira interrogans, often transmitted by contact with water or soil contaminated by rodent urine. Although typically mild with proper treatment, the disease can progress to severe forms with kidney failure, neurological damage or haemorrhage, and can even lead to death if left untreated.
The disease primarily affects people in high-risk occupations, such as agricultural and sewage workers, and those involved in freshwater recreational activities. Early detection is crucial for effective treatment, particularly in the early stages when PCR testing is most effective for serum or plasma samples. For urine samples, PCR is more reliable from the second week after symptom onset.

The BIOSYNEX AMPLIQUICK® Leptospira Kit uses qPCR technology with fluorescent probe hydrolysis to detect the lipL32 gene specific for pathogenic strains of Leptospira. It includes an exogenous internal control (CIEZ) and an endogenous control (RNase P) to validate the accuracy of sample collection, DNA extraction and amplification, minimising the risk of false negatives.
This method ensures highly specific detection of Leptospira DNA, with fluorescence signals directly correlating with amplification of target sequences. The test is compatible with serum, plasma and urine samples, providing flexibility in clinical diagnostics.

The kit simplifies testing with a ready-to-use master mix, positive and negative controls, and comprehensive instructions. It is compatible with samples treated with the BIOSYNEX AMPLIQUICK® Sample Treatment Kit or processed for DNA extraction using appropriate methods. For optimal sensitivity, extracted DNA is recommended for urine samples.
