Method & sample types
The TruPCR® Bacterial & Fungal Meningitis PCR Panel Kit detects the principal bacterial and fungal causes of meningitis directly from cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in a single multiplex run. CSF is a low-volume, precious sample, a key reason a combined panel is preferable to running several separate single-target assays, each of which consumes sample volume that may not be available for repeat testing.
Controls & interpretation
An internal control confirms extraction and amplification integrity independent of whether any pathogen target is detected, which is particularly important for CSF given its typically low pathogen burden relative to blood or respiratory samples. A valid negative result, internal control amplified, no pathogen targets detected, supports ruling out the organisms on the panel; an invalid run (failed internal control) should prompt a repeat rather than a reported negative.
Workflow integration
Turnaround from CSF to a multiplex PCR result is measured in hours rather than the days a culture-based workup can take, which matters directly to clinical management: empirical antimicrobial therapy can be narrowed or escalated on the basis of a same-day molecular result rather than waiting on culture and susceptibility. The panel is intended to sit alongside, not replace, culture where organism recovery for further characterisation (e.g. susceptibility testing) is still clinically required.
