Multiplexing chlamydia and gonorrhoeae in one PCR run

Abstract

Dual-target detection of Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae from a single sample, why combined STI testing outperforms ordering the two assays separately.

Application note · Presto · Presto 100 CT/NG PCR Kit

Method & sample types

Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae frequently co-occur, and clinical presentation rarely distinguishes between them reliably. The Presto 100 CT/NG PCR Kit detects both targets in a single multiplex reaction from urogenital swabs or urine, which is both faster and more sample-efficient than ordering two separate single-target tests.

Controls & interpretation

Each target occupies its own detection channel, so a positive result identifies which organism (or both) is present without ambiguity, and an internal control confirms the reaction amplified correctly independent of either target’s result. As with any dual-target design, a co-infection is reported as both channels positive rather than requiring a second test.

Workflow integration

Combined CT/NG testing shortens time-to-treatment for both organisms at once and reduces the sample-collection burden on the patient compared with sequential single-target ordering. It fits standard Real-Time PCR workflows already used for other urogenital or STI panels, so no separate platform is required to add it to an existing test menu.
